From the last 4 days I can say: There is movement westwards by Russian AF, depicted by red (over 48 hours ago) and yellow arrows (most recent. up to 48 hours) location.
When I look at maps of fighting in Ukraine, and Donetsk Oblast specifically, I think: You only stand a chance against an adversary that is superior in numbers if you have a technological edge (far reaching weapons, great satellite technology, Starlink capabilities, lots of skilled special operations forces, great drones, air superiority).
In Switzerland everyone knew we would not have stood a chance in the flatlands in WWII. For that reason we would have fallen back to the mountains:
Background and Reasons for the Alpenredoubt
🌄Geographical Advantage: The Swiss Alps are characterized by rugged terrain, making them difficult to invade and navigate. In the event of a conflict, the high mountains would provide a natural barrier against enemy forces, allowing Swiss troops to retreat and regroup effectively.
🌄Historical Context: Switzerland has a long-standing policy of neutrality and a commitment to defend its territory. During the tumultuous period of World War II, many European countries faced occupation or aggressive military campaigns. Switzerland, fearing a potential invasion by Nazi Germany or other neighboring countries, felt the need to develop a strong defensive strategy.
🌄Political and Military Strategy: The Swiss government and military leaders believed that, if they were forced to engage in a defensive war, they could still greatly influence the outcome of the war by retreating to the Alpine regions. It was thought that the Swiss military could conduct guerrilla warfare from these mountainous strongholds, making any invasion costly and difficult for aggressors.
🌄Long-Term Planning: The concept of the Alpenredoubt was not only a response to immediate threats but also a reflection of Switzerland’s historical experiences with warfare and invasions. Swiss defenders had previously relied on the natural advantages of the terrain in various conflicts, reinforcing the belief that a mountain-based defense would be successful.
🌄Mobilization and Preparedness: The Swiss military invested significant resources in fortifying mountain passes and building bunkers and fortifications, ensuring that thousands of soldiers could be mobilized into the Alps if necessary.
